POSITION: Lead Level Designer
Description
Above all else, the Lead Level Designer is responsible for insuring that the game’s levels are the most enjoyable experiences possible. The director and owner of all level content, the Lead Level Designer is a wiz with game editors and has a passion for creating the most unique and amazing levels. When the chips are down, the Lead Level Designer will try anything, do anything, to make sure the hopes and dreams of gamers are captured in a game’s levels. The Lead Level Designer functions as the go-to person for all questions relating to design content technology, not just the current game’s toolset. The Lead Level Designer is knowledgeable about many different toolsets, understanding their strengths and weaknesses. When technicians need to know how to improve a toolset, the Lead Level Designer knows which improvement will be the most effective.
Lastly, the Lead Level Designer must help train and direct a team of level designers. While the Lead Level Designer will create levels directly, he also must insure that all of the game’s levels meet his extremely high quality bar. The Lead Level Designer knows that it only takes one bad level to make a gamer put down the game forever, and he will never let that bad level happen on his watch. A jack of many trades, the Lead Level Designer is part architect, part scripter, part artist, part cinematographer, and part mentor. His burden is heavy, for the Lead Level Designer is entrusted with an arsenal of features and content and he must use this arsenal to create an original experience that gamers will be discussing for decades.
